Liberia to La Fortuna: the drive, and where to break it

Aerial view of the buses on a green hillside in Tierras Morenas, above the hills around Lake Arenal

The short answer

About 135 km (84 miles) and 3 hours without stops. Paved the whole way if you go through Tilarán, so a regular car can do it, though we always recommend a 4x4. The last hour winds around Lake Arenal on a narrow, unlit road, so drive it in daylight.

We live on this road. Our three school-bus stays sit in the hills above Lake Arenal, about halfway along it, and most of our guests are making this exact drive. This is what we tell them.

The route: go through Tilarán

From Liberia airport, take Route 21 to the Interamericana (Route 1) and head south to Cañas. In Cañas, turn east onto Route 142 and climb to Tilarán. From Tilarán, 142 follows the north shore of Lake Arenal through Nuevo Arenal, past the dam, and into La Fortuna.

Put Tilarán in Waze, not La Fortuna. For reasons nobody around here understands, Waze and some other apps send you a different way if you enter your final destination, including steep unpaved stretches. Set Tilarán as your destination, and once you reach Tilarán, set the next one and follow Waze from there. That way it's paved the whole way.

The first half is flat, straight highway through Guanacaste cattle country. The second half is the part people remember: wind turbines on the ridges above Tilarán, then an hour of curves with the lake on one side and forest on the other.

Cows, fog, and the dark

  • Cows

This is ranching country. Cattle cross the road and sometimes stand on it, especially on the curves. Take bends slowly.

  • Fog

The high stretch around Tilarán and the wind farms can fog in fast, most often in the afternoon and in the rainy season. Lights on, speed down.

  • The dark

Costa Rica is close to the equator, so the sun sets between about 5:15 and 6:00 PM all year. If you land after midday, clear customs and pick up your car, you'll reach the lake road around sunset. It has no streetlights, few shoulders and plenty of tight bends. By day it's beautiful. At night, most travellers wish they had stopped.

Where to stop on the way

In the order you'll pass them:

  • Llanos de Cortés waterfall

Near Bagaces, about 20 minutes south of Liberia. A wide, short waterfall with a swimming hole at the bottom, a few minutes off Route 1.

  • Centro de Rescate Las Pumas

In southern Cañas. A rescue center and sanctuary for pumas, jaguars, ocelots, monkeys and birds, many of which go back to the wild.

  • Cañas

Start with a leche dormida at Don Rogelio, across from the central park: a Cañas drink made to a family recipe since 1946 that's still a secret. Then stock up at the Compre Bien supermarket; it's the best shop before the mountains.

  • Tilarán

Fill the tank at the JSM station; you drive right past it. For lunch, Hotel Guadalupe has good, honest food.

  • Chicharronera La Península, in Tronadora

A short detour from Tilarán down to the lake, for a proper chifrijo.

  • Café y Macadamia

On the lake. The best lake viewpoint on the drive, plus brunch, fruit shakes, coffee and cinnamon rolls.

  • Las Tinajas

In Nuevo Arenal, for good pizza on the lake.

Break the drive: stay the night halfway

Santos Skoolie sits in the hills of Tierras Morenas, about 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 30 from Liberia airport (depending on rush hour) and about 1 hour 15 from La Fortuna. It's a 10-minute detour off Route 142: turn uphill onto Route 927, drive 5 to 8 minutes, and our gate is on the left.

Land, drive an easy hour and a half in daylight, and arrive with the sun still up. Self check-in starts at 2:00 PM. Watch the sunset from the deck, sleep, and take the lake road the next morning with fresh eyes. Café y Macadamia is close for breakfast.

Three school buses, each rebuilt by hand in the woodshop beside the parking area:

  • Sunset Deck

The biggest deck, sleeps 3, dogs welcome, the lowest price.

  • Plunge Pool

A private pool facing the best sunset line, for two.

  • Spacious

The roomiest interior, its own pool over the valley, for two.

The road is paved to the door, and there's parking on site. A lot of guests book one night to break the drive and then wish they had booked two.

If you stay a second day

Río Celeste is about 1.5 hours away: the bright blue river and waterfall in Tenorio Volcano National Park. Pair it with a river tubing trip. We send guests to Chary, a local guide we trust; ask us for the contact when you book.

Drive or shuttle?

Shared and private shuttles run Liberia to La Fortuna every day, and they know the road. They make sense if you'll stay in La Fortuna and use tours from there.

A rental car makes sense if you want the stops above, a night halfway, or a day at Río Celeste. We always recommend a 4x4: it gives you more freedom and gets you there faster. A regular car can do this route if you go through Tilarán.

Questions people ask

How far is Liberia from La Fortuna?
About 135 km (84 miles) by road.
How long is the drive?
About 3 hours without stops. Allow 4 to 5 with a waterfall, lunch and a viewpoint.
Is the road paved? Do I need a 4x4?
Yes, paved the whole way if you go through Tilarán on Route 142. A regular car can do it, but we always recommend a 4x4: more freedom, and you get there faster. Waze sometimes picks unpaved shortcuts; set Tilarán as your first destination and it won't.
Is it safe to drive at night?
The highway is fine. The lake section is narrow, curvy and unlit, with cattle and fog. Drive it in daylight, which is why so many people stop halfway.
Is Liberia or San José closer to La Fortuna?
Both airports are about 3 hours away. Liberia makes more sense if you're also visiting the Guanacaste beaches or Río Celeste.
What about driving from La Fortuna back to Liberia?
Same road in reverse, about 3 hours: Route 142 around the lake to Tilarán, down to Cañas, then north on Route 1. Set Tilarán in Waze first, then Liberia. Leave early enough to finish the lake section before dark. For an early flight, you can spend the last night with us, about 1 hour 20 from the airport.
